In
an effort to address abandoned buildings, blight, crime, quality of life issues
and economic development, Mayor Jennings’ Block By Block Committee has begun to
design the strategic plan that will be instituted over the next few weeks in
Zone 1.
Meeting
weekly, the committee is focused on carrying out Mayor Jennings’ “Block By
Block” initiative that he announced last month in a joint press conference with
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and District Attorney David Soares.
Under
the direction of Albany Police Chief James Tuffey, the “Block By Block”
committee composition includes key individuals from a wide array of City
agencies who are charged with “rolling out” the initiative in the coming weeks.
The
development phase is focused upon an overall evaluation and analysis of Zone 1
and the impact areas that will be targeted.
A multi-phase approach to crime suppression, building and code
enforcement, neighborhood cleanup, and economic development will be utilized.
Currently,
members of the committee are physically inspecting and identifying all areas in
Zone 1 that have contributed to the aforementioned issues impacting quality of
life. An ongoing systematic analysis
will map out an aggressive approach to improving the initial target area.
As
the committee work and response intensifies, weekly updates will be made
available to keep residents and neighborhoods apprised of the progress.
