Albany as a Center for Education

Albany boasts seven colleges or universities awarding degrees in such diverse fields as business, education, medicine, and law. As the Capital of New York State, Albany is involved in education to a degree not too often attained by a City of its size. For instance, Albany is the headquarters of the State Education Department. Moreover, located at the Empire State Plaza is the Cultural Education Center that houses the State Museum, Library and Archives.

Educational Institutions

Albany College of Pharmacy - founded in 1881, is an extension of Union University of Schenectady. It offers undergraduate degrees in pharmacy and medical technology and a master's program in health systems management. Visit www.acp.edu.

Albany Law School - founded in 1851, is dedicated to offering the student of law the highest quality education in jurisprudence. Famous graduates include former President William McKinley and U.S. Supreme Court Judges David J. Brewer and Robert H. Jackson. Visit www.albanylaw.edu/

Albany Medical College - founded in 1839, is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the education of health care personnel, research in the basic and clinical medical sciences, and service to the community. It is affiliated with the Albany Medical Center Hospital. Visit www.amc.edu.

Cornell University School of Industrial & Labor Relations - Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. This is a federal land-grant institution of New York State, a private endowed university, a member of the Ivy League, and a partner of the State University of New York. This university has seven undergraduate units and four graduate and professional units in Ithaca, two medical graduate and professional units in New York City, and one in Doha, Qatar. Excelsior College - Founded in 1971, they apply the college credit you have already earned to a respected degree in Liberal Arts, Business, Technology or Nursing.  Their graduates advance ever upward to graduate schools and better jobs in business, government, and health care. The College of St. Rose founded in 1920, is an independent, coeducational institution serving nearly three thousand students. Sage College of Albany founded in 1957, is a two-year coeducational division of Russell Sage College of Troy. Sage offers a wide range of individual choice in fields such as business, nursing, fine arts and communications leading to the Associates Degree.  Visit www.sage.edu.

Maria College is a two-year coeducational career-oriented institution offering Associates Degrees in nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, early childhood education, business, and liberal and general studies. State University of New York at Albany is one of the four major university centers in the SUNY system. The University enrolls approximately 11,500 undergraduate and 5,000 graduate students making it the largest university in the area.
