Welcome to the official website for the City of Albany, New York. New York State’s Capital City celebrated its quadricentennial in 2009, and has played a critically important role throughout the history of New York, as well as the entire nation.

Albany was designated as the State Capital in 1797, and as is the second oldest chartered city in the United States. Albany’s rich history is prominently displayed throughout the City, including its rich architecture and venerable institutions. Albany’s attractive size lends itself to feel like a small community while at the same time having components of a metropolitan area.

Albany enjoys a vibrant downtown, a rich mixture of historical neighborhoods, and an exciting variety of arts, cultural and entertainment opportunities. The City of Albany has experienced unprecedented progress and development over the years. Capitalize Albany, the City’s economic development strategy, has guided Albany’s vision for the past 14 years and has yielded numerous opportunities and accomplishments for this City, including billions of dollars in new investment.

In particular, Downtown Albany has witnessed a tremendous amount of growth over the years, be it the construction of the Hudson River Way Pedestrian Bridge, new offices, apartments, hotels and restaurants, or the addition of new parking garages. Downtown’s vibrant arts and entertainment district continues to be a destination that draws thousands of people into Albany. Most importantly, Downtown continues to progress forward and draw new investments for the future.

Albany’s historic and diverse neighborhoods remain the foundation of our City. Albany continues to witness positive improvements to its many unique neighborhoods. The practice of developing neighborhood plans has proven extremely successful for our City and is yielding unprecedented levels of investment. Neighborhoods like Park South, Arbor Hill and the South End are witnessing redevelopment efforts and emerging as strong communities and desirable locations for homeowners.

Along with our neighborhoods and entertainment district, our City is positioned as the economic and cultural center of the Capital Region of New York State. The growth at Albany NanoTech has resulted in attracting global businesses to the area, making us premier business destination. Our City has numerous opportunities to provide growing businesses, thus making it an attractive location to develop and grow a business.
