Mounted Unit

The Albany Police Department’s Mounted Unit is one of the only full-time Mounted Patrols in upstate New York. The unit is part of the Special Operations Division. The Mounted Unit is comprised of 4 Officers, a Sergeant, and 7 Mounts. All of the horses are Draft Horses and are chosen because of their quiet, calm demeanor and commanding presence. The unit is headquartered at the Stevens Farm, which is located on the banks of the Normanskill Creek. The unit is one of the most requested in the Police Department and performs over two hundred details in addition to everyday patrol functions. The Mounted Unit can be seen at many of the City of Albany’s festivals and special events. However, patrolling the many parks and downtown area are everyday duties of the unit.
