Motor Unit
OverviewThe Albany Police Department Motor Unit has 6 Harley Davidson FLHP motorcycles. The motorcycles are white with blue and orange graphics that read Albany Police. There are currently 9 Police Officers assigned to the Traffic Safety Division that are Motor Officers. The Motor Unit is a specialized unit that falls under the control of Special Operations. Officers assigned to the unit must be certified as Police Motorcycle Operators, Radar Operators, and Accident Investigators. The Motor Officer wears a two-tone blue helmet, a leather Police belt with the “Sam Browne” over the shoulder belt, a silver whistle, a “wing and wheel patch”, riding britches with a white stripe down the leg, and tall black leather-riding boots that are highly polished. The Albany Police Department Motor Unit has many uses, one of which is patrol activity. Officers assigned to the Unit regularly patrol the city and enforce the Vehicle and Traffic Laws. In addition, the Motor Unit performs escort duties. These duties include escorting dignitaries, elected officials, and entertainers when necessary, leading all parades in the city unless there is snow on the ground, and leading or closing off intersections for funeral details. The Motor Unit regularly engages in public relations events as well. Neighborhood picnics meet and greets, community meetings, and block parties are all regularly visited by Motor Officers. In fact, anytime a Motor Unit is on the street, the Officer gets many waves and thumbs ups from people passing by. Children especially like to wave and talk to the Motor Officers.
