Deputy Chief Stephen M. Reilly


Deputy Chief Stephen Reilly has been a member of the Albany Police Department for over 17 years.  Deputy Chief Reilly is responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the Police Department. 

Deputy Chief Reilly started his career as a patrol officer and has held the position of detective, patrol sergeant and detective sergeant in both the Criminal Investigations Unit and the Children and Family Services Unit. Deputy Chief Reilly was then promoted to the rank of commander and supervised the Office of Professional Standards (Internal Affairs). In this position he was responsible for supervising the investigations of many important and sensitive internal cases. He was later promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief of Police and oversaw the operations of the department’s investigative units, the Traffic Safety Division, Communications Division and the Emergency Services Team. In November of 2005 he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief of Police where he continues to oversee the day to day operations of the entire department.

Earlier in his career Deputy Chief Reilly was  active in the Albany Police Officers Union and held a variety of leadership positions including, Unit Chairman, Grievance Committee Chairman, Sergeant at Arms, Vice-President and then President. Having been both a union leader and a member of the command staff he has extensive experience in labor relations issues. Reilly has been actively involved in the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements from both sides of the aisle.

Deputy Chief Stephen Reilly’s educational accomplishments include a Bachelor’s of Professional Studies Degree in Criminal Justice Administration, graduation from the FBI National Academy Session 226, The Colonel Henry Williams Homicide Seminar and a multitude of public safety training schools and programs. Deputy Chief Reilly is planning to continue his education at the graduate level in the field of Labor and Public Policy Studies.

Reilly is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served four years of active duty on the USS Capodanno FF-1093 and five years in the New York Army National Guard.  While a member of the USS Capodanno, he was deployed overseas to various parts of the world including Europe, the North Atlantic Region and the Caribbean. While serving our country as a member of the Armed Forces, Deputy Chief Reilly had the opportunity to meet many interesting people and experience the diversity offered by different cultures throughout the world. It is these experiences that he credits most with helping him to achieve success throughout his career.  

Deputy Chief Reilly is married to his wife and best friend, Marie, and is the father of three wonderful children. He is a strong supporter of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Capital Region organization and volunteers his time as a mentor and a Big Brother.   

Deputy Chief Reilly believes in the servant based model of leadership and recognizes that the most successful leaders put the needs of those they serve before their own.
