The "Tip411" Texting Tip Line The Albany Police Department has made an anonymous texting tip line available to the public. To use the service the caller texts “APDTips” and the tip information to 847411 (Tip411). All of the information is forwarded to the Albany County Crime Analysis Center and is 100 percent anonymous. Citizen Observer’s technology removes the identifying information of the sender before the tip is forwarded. The service allows a detective to follow up with the sender in a response text, but the citizen remains completely anonymous throughout the conversation.

Sex Offender Registry
The Albany Police Department joins over 40 other leading New York counties in making available on the Albany Police Department web site as well as other sites throughout the county, a citizen-friendly, easy to use, Albany sex offender registry, enabling citizens to search for the presence of registered sex offenders and predators in proximity to their homes, place of work, schools and day cares. This information is being provided to the citizens in a form they can easily use any time day or night via the nation’s leading sex offender registration and notification solution, OffenderWatch™. Citizens may enter any address of interest to them, and see a map and listing of offenders within a user defined radius (of .25 miles out to 2 miles) of that address. Then, they may register the address to be continuously monitored by the Department, who will send to them an email alerting them if an offender or predator should register an address within their specified radius of their registered address. Citizens may confidentially register as many addresses as they like, at no cost to them. The purpose of the program is to lessen the anxiety of citizens by proactively alerting them should an offender/predator move within proximity to them, and to enhance the security and safety of Albany citizens. The program also enables the Department to verify that offender addresses do not violate any safety buffers that may be implemented around protected institutions in the County, such as schools, day cares and churches. Overview
The Albany Police Department is steeped in the rich tradition of policing. Historically the department can be traced back to 1609 when the first Dutch Settlers traveled up the Hudson River and established Fort Orange, which eventually evolved into the City of Albany.
When the City of Albany received it’s charter in 1686 enforcement of the laws and preserving order was the responsibility of constables.
In 1851 a regular and systematic police department was established. As the Industrialization Period took hold in the 1900’s. The police department grew along with the city.
Today, the department stands 340 officers strong. The men and woman of the Albany Police department are dedicated towards providing the citizens of Albany with professional service, preserving the integrity of their profession, and providing each and every citizen the respect they deserve.
The department has also adapted to the vast technologies of the 21st century. Crime mapping, statistical analysis, e-reporting have provide policing with state of the art tools to combat and deter crime.
Developing relationships within the community and strengthening existing relationships inside and outside of law enforcement will enable the Albany Police Department to provide the most efficient and valuable services to the entire community.
