2009 Tulip Queen Finalists

Mayor Jerry Jennings and the City of Albany are proud to announce the 2009 Tulip Queen and Court.

“Our Tulip Queen and her Court proudly represent our City. These young women personify the meaning of community by giving of themselves to help the residents and organizations in Albany” said Mayor Jennings. “I know they always bring a great deal of energy, kindness and knowledge and once again I look forward to working with them on the Mayor’s Literacy Campaign.”

Tulip Queen Juliana Hernandez, 21, Loudonville NY
Juliana is a Senior at the College of St Rose focusing on Public Communications and Spanish. As the president of the communication honor society she organized Aids Walk, educational events and fundraised for Relay for Life. She has volunteered for the organization S.O.M.E., Habitat for Humanity, Esperanza (translating for missionaries in Costa Rica) and participated with the Intercultural Leadership Mentor Program at St. Rose. In her spare time Juliana plays guitar, sings, enjoys jogging, traveling & reading. She looks to obtain her Masters in Internal Affairs to work with a community outreach program with emphasis on immigration issues or as an international reporter using both English & Spanish languages. As a member of the Tulip Queen & Court she wants to work as a team on motivating children to develop confidence & a love for reading. 

Carly Brooks, 21, Albany NY
Carly is a Senior at University at Albany studying Criminal Justice & Political Science with a minor in Business. She’s worked locally at Unity House in Troy and local soup kitchens as well as relief work in New Orleans, Guatemala, Staten Island, Kentucky & North Carolina. She helped introduce & direct Community Connections, an intergenerational community service program in Glenville, NY. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and outdoor sports like tennis, soccer and hiking. Carly hopes to pursue a career in law, focusing on health care reform. As a member of the Tulip Court she wants to focus on youth outreach and juvenile delinquency prevention.

Colleen Cavanaugh, 18, Watervliet NY
Colleen is a Freshman at the College of St Rose studying Chemistry Adolescent Education. She has been involved with many local & national organizations including The Elizabeth Nash Foundation, The Watervliet Senior Citizen Center, S.O.M.E. in Washington DC and Habitat for Humanity. Other than volunteering, Colleen plays piano, enjoys gardening and photography. Once her undergrad work is complete she hopes to obtain her masters degree in chemistry and teach high-school science. As a teacher she wants to encourage young women to pursue careers in math and science. As a member of the Tulip Court she wants to advance the Mayor’s literacy campaign & make a positive impact on the people they meet throughout their year of reign.

Stephanie Herold, 18, Albany NY
A Senior at Bishop Maginn High School, Stephanie will attend Siena College in the fall as a liberal arts student. Her volunteer experience consists of helping at Summer Youth Basketball Camps, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk, babysitting and participating in a student leadership workshop. She plays basketball & softball, enjoys reading, boating and also loves to swim. Once she completes her college education, Stephanie wants to enter the workforce and make a positive impact on society. As a member of the Tulip Court she would like to use the literacy campaign to help as many people as possible throughout their year of reign.

Rosa Richburg, 19, Albany NY
A Freshman at Onondaga Community College, Rosa will be transferring to University at Albany this fall to pursue her degree in business. Rosa’s volunteer experience includes food pantry work with the Girl Scouts, Albany High School Black History Month Celebration and book drives. She loves to spend time with her friends & family, listening to music, baking and surfing the web. Rosa aspires to enter into the public relations field and contribute to a harmonious relationship between people & media. As a member of the Tulip Court she would like to successfully launch a new program for underprivileged children and get more young people involved in the community.

Jessica Engel, age 21, Voorheesville
Jessica is a senior at SUNY Plattsburgh majoring in communications with a concentration in broadcast journalism. Her hobbies include all sports from volleyball to basketball and she loves to golf with her dad. Jessica has taught Sunday school and volunteers for many organizations such as Ronald McDonald House, food drives, Relay for Life and the Capital City Rescue Mission. Her career goal is to become an anchor for entertainment news.

Kayla Janeski, age 23, Albany
Kayla is a 2007 SUNY Albany graduate with a degree in communications. She’s volunteered at Ellis hospital, the AIDS walk, Earth Day clean up and Relay for Life. She enjoys a variety of outdoor activities such as tennis, running and soccer. She loves to cook and bowl with her friends. Kayla currently works at the NYS Assembly and plans to continue her involvement there and is interested in possibly running for local office one day.

Amy LaGrange, age 21, Feura Bush
Amy attends the College of Saint Rose with a dual major in Childhood and Special Education with a concentration in English. She works at Catholic Charities and at the Resource Center for Independent Living. As a volunteer, she has taught Sunday School, led youth groups and has worked with the Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center. Her hobbies include teaching and helping people with disabilities. Amy plans to be a special education teacher for an urban area school.

Caitlin Spinelli, age 18, Albany
Caitlin is a Senior at Colonie Central High School and plans to attend college to major in business. She has volunteered at St. Peters, local food pantries, the Ronald McDonald House and youth court. She enjoys spending time with her family, running and reading. Caitlin aspires to take over her family business or work on Wall Street in New York City.

Sarah Volk, age 21, Albany

Sarah is a Junior studying sociology at SUNY Albany and works in Human Resources at the State Tax and Finance Department. She is president of the community service club (Circle K) and volunteers for the rescue mission in downtown Albany and Arbor Hill Community Center. In 2007, she traveled to New Orleans to assist hurricane relief efforts.
