Training & EMSThe main duty of the Training Division is to teach safe work habits and methods in order to avoid firefighter injuries at emergency scenes. This approach to training must be taken for firefighting, vehicle extrication, HazMat, confined space entry, dive team, driver training, etc. This Division also teaches department members all of the Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P.s) issued by the Chief, In-Quarters Safety, State and Federal Mandates. The Division teaches firefighters all of the necessary updates that arise out of changes to the building codes. Even though firefighting is a small portion of the modern firefighters job, it is still the most dangerous and produces the highest number of injuries. The Division's main goals are to instill Fire and EMS scene safety.
The Training Division delivers programs that teach correct firefighting procedures and explains the proper use of equipment in both the Fire and EMS fields. They coordinate Department services and responses with the local hospitals and ambulance transporters, provide public E.M.T. and C.P.R. courses, and set medical coverage for special events throughout the City.
Most importantly are the monthly Quality Assurance (Q&A) meetings where the Department reviews itself as to its job performance at E.M.S. calls. This division is under the direction of Deputy Chief Frank Nerney.
