Commission on Human Rights
The Commission on Human Rights is responsible for enforcing the City's Human Rights Ordinance in order to resolve incidences of discrimination or tension between conflicting groups within the community. The Commission on Human Rights has general jurisdiction to hear disputes and appeals referred by the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity.
The Commission on Human Rights annually co-sponsors the following activities to help the community foster mutual respect and understanding of all persons regardless of race, religion or national background: the Fair Housing Month Essay and Poster Contest, the Juneteenth Celebration, and the Race Equality and Inclusive Communities Week!
This Commission on Human Rights consists of nine members serving staggered terms. Members serve for one, two, and three-year terms. Members must reside in the City of Albany and posses a reputation for fairness, integrity and responsibility. Officers and employees of the City are not eligible for appointment to the Commission.
