Comptroller Thomas Nitido's Biography
Tom Nitido was elected to the office of Comptroller in 2001 and re-elected in 2005.
Comptroller Nitido has overseen the upgrading of the City's accounting practices to meet the most current professional standards and improved the City's fiscal management. He has collaborated with City Departments to increase operating efficiency and improve purchasing practices. He has also increased oversight and auditing of departments.
As Comptroller, he serves a member of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment, the Board of Contract and Supply and the Board of the Albany Community Development Agency.
Prior to becoming Comptroller, Mr. Nitido was the Executive Director of the New York State Assembly Committee on Health, where he had worked since 1985. Tom Nitido also served on the Albany Common Council from 1993 to 2001, representing Albany's 9th Ward (the New Scotland Avenue area neighborhood).
On the Common Council he chaired the Committee on Health and the Environment. The American Lung Association honored Mr. Nitido for his sponsorship of landmark legislation restricting tobacco promotion and advertising in the City of Albany. He also chaired the Council Committee on Transportation and served on the Public Safety, and Zoning Committees. Comptroller Nitido was a member of the City's Management Audit Advisory Committee, which analyzed City departments for improved efficiency and cost savings.
Comptroller Nitido is a member of the Albany County Board of Health. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the NYS Government Finance Officer’s Association
Comptroller Nitido is a Graduate of Union College (BA Economics) and of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse University (MS Environmental Science and Communications). He and his wife, Wendy, have a daughter, Giulietta.
