First elected in 1997, Daniel F. Herring is the longest serving member of the Common Council.  After serving on the Council for ten years, Daniel was elected as Majority Leader and continues to serve in that role.

Daniel has been the Chair of the Planning, Economic and Land Use Committee for over ten years. He is the Vice Chair of the Finance Committee and a member of the Council Operations and Ethics Committee. Daniel was also appointed to the City of Albany Charter Review Commission in 2005 and to the Mayor’s Police Chief Search Committee in 2010.

Daniel was Chair of the Albany 2030 Comprehensive Plan Board from 2010-2012 and remains fully invested in the implementation of the first ever Comprehensive Plan for Albany. Always a diligent advocate for his constituents, he is committed to the future planning and development of the City and ensuring that the process includes accountability and proves to be effective.

As a long time member and current Vice Chair of the Council's Finance Committee, Daniel is profoundly interested in both the short and long term fiscal well being of the City. He has been involved in working on the Annual City Budget, and other fiscal issues such as: tax exempt properties, the Harriman Campus PILOTs, State aid to cities and property taxes. Daniel also authored legislation establishing a "Debt Policy" for the City as required by City Charter revisions of 2006.

Daniel is the Director of the Dockside Education Program for the New Netherlands Museum/Replica Ship Half Moon. He is a member of American Legion, Zaloga Post 1520, as well as a member of Mater Christi Parish. He is also a former board member of the Shaker Heritage Society.

Majority Leader Herring was born in Amherst, Massachusetts and raised in Uniondale, New York. He graduated from Uniondale High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science from Binghamton University. Daniel is a veteran of the US Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. He is now married with three children and three grandchildren and resides in Albany. Daniel was a Budget Analyst for New York State for 30 years, specifically with the Department of Labor and the Office of Mental Health.
