Ward 1 - Hon. Dorcey Applyrs
Dorcey Applyrs was born in Washington, D.C. and moved to Albany, New York after graduating from Delaware State University with her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She is a graduate of the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY Albany) School of Public Health with a Doctorate and Master's of Public Health.
Prior to returning to school to pursue her doctorate degree, Dorcey was employed in the field of HIV/ AIDS as an advocate where she worked to improve the quality of life of communities disproportionately impacted by the HIV/ AIDS epidemic. In 2005, Dorcey was hired as the Director of Programs for the Capital District African American Coalition on AIDS located in Albany, New York. Dorcey later accepted a position as a Capacity Building Assistance Specialist with the Harm Reduction Coalition located in New York City where she provided technical assistance, consultation and skills-building trainings to community-based organizations and health departments nationally. Dorcey has completed numerous fellowships at the state and federal-level.
Dorcey is actively involved in the Albany community and resides in the First Ward with her husband Don. She is a member of the Second Avenue Neighborhood Association and Metropolitan New Testament Baptist Church. She has been actively involved since 2004 with the Albany, New York Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, a public service organization. Dorcey has served as a program advisor for the Delta GEMS program, which mentors teenage girls in the Capital District. She is also a board member for the Center for Women in Government and Civil Society and In Our Own Voices (IOOV).
